Baskets

Jack & Hazel Cook
Barnwell, SC
The Cooks have been making baskets for over 50 years. Jack was
taught long ago by his family members and then passed on the
craft to his wife. Hazel tells how Jack would cut his own oak splints
and soak them in their one & only bath tub. She  jokingly admits
that she had to learn how to make baskets if she ever wanted to
reclaim her tub for bathing. They use white oak as well as other
materials to weave their baskets.

Chair Caning

Pat Long
Barnwell, SC
Pat learned to cane from Ms. Izzy.  She was at a tractor show with
her husband and had nothing to do.  She sat down under a tent to
wait and started watching an older woman cane a chair.  Finally Ms.
Izzy asked her if she wanted to try it and she did.  When Ms. Izzy
finished the chair, she turned it over to sign it and told Pat to sign it
also, since she had helped make it.  The idea of having her name
on something so uniquely made gave her such a thrill, that she
went home and starting caning her own.  (With a little more help
from Ms. Izzy)
